About the VSFSA

The Virginia School Food Service Association is a professional association which is an affiliate of the American School Food Service Association. The association is dedicated to:

  • encouraging and promoting the optimal health, nutrition and education for all children by supporting the implementation of nutritionally adequate, educationally sound, financially accountable school food and nutrition programs.
  • promoting the highest standards for child nutrition and school/community nutrition programs with emphasis on nutritionally adequate meals which are acceptable to students
  • encouraging united efforts between the school personnel, allied organizations, industry and the community to assure that each student receives the benefits of school food and nutrition programs
  • encourage and develop the highest quality standards for school programs and provide appropriate educational programs for professional growth of the school food and nutrition personnel.
  • promote national nutrition policy.

VSFSA Membership Benefits

Annual VSFSA Conference

  • Programs provided offer continuing education credits for certified members
  • Reduced rates for VSFSA members
  • Food Show displaying newest products available for school food service industry
  • Certified members receive ribbons to wear during conference designating them as VSFSA/ASFSA certified
  • Local chapters provide continuing education programs for certified members.
  • Local chapters provide networking and exchange of ideas.
  • Magazines
    • Members receive three issues annually of "The News of School Food Service in Virginia," which contains articles of member activity and ideas throughout the state as well as contributions from vendor members on the VSFSA Industry Advisory Board
    • "The News" also provides ballots for electing VSFSA Officers, and the various forms required for awards and scholarships.

VSFSA Awards

VSFSA members are eligible to apply for state and national awards:

  • The Louise Sublette Award of Excellence for school food service managers
  • The VSFSA President's Chapter Awards
  • VSFSA 100% Membership Award for local chapters
  • VSFSA Heart of the Program Award for school food service workers
  • VSFSA Service Award (For members with at least 20 years service)
  • 100% Membership Award for Individual School or Administrative Office
  • 100% Membership Award for School Food System
  • Bake-off/Recipe Contests

VSFSA Sponsored Activities

  • Supports Annual ASFSA Art Contest for students across the state
  • Fall Regional Mini-Meetings offer programs earning continuing education credits. (Reduced rate for members.)
  • Industry/Supervisors' Meeting fostering dialogue between Industry and the school food service business.
  • Involvement with allied groups via committees which provide materials and training modules available to members.

VSFSA Scholarships

Scholarships available through VSFSA/ASFSA membership:

  • Helen G. Ward for $1,500
  • Horace C. Snead for $2,000
  • Tony's Food Service Scholarship in amounts of $250, $500, $750, and $1,000 for members or children of members
  • Professional Growth (ASFSA) scholarship for members attending college in amount of $500
  • Hubert Humphrey Scholarship Loan (ASFSA) for members in graduate school - $2,000
